Plan your visit

Boutique orthodontics in the heart of Gramercy

Find everything you need to plan your first visit, limit surprises, and get answers to frequently-asked questions. We’ve found that sharing information about what to expect helps reduce anxiety and intimidation, especially among children who might feel nervous ahead of their first appointment. And, as always, if you don’t find what you’re looking for here, you can send us a note at info@royalorthodontics.com, or give us a call at (212)683-1370.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING
YOUR FIRST VISIT

Find more to smile about at Royal

When you visit our office, you’ll be welcomed by our front-desk team. They’re the ones you’ve been emailing with to get your appointment scheduled, so don’t be surprised if they already remember details about you!

After you check in, feel free to enjoy our cozy lobby while you wait. We purposely designed it to feel more like a comfy lounge and less like a waiting room because we believe you can have the best of both worlds—a boutique experience that feels neighborly and professional all at once.

Next, you’ll meet with Dr. Royal or Dr. Popper for an introductory exam. They’ll carefully conduct an examination that includes x-rays, photos, and/or an intraoral scan to assess orthodontic challenges and discuss possible treatments, time commitment, investment, and other information that will help you make an informed decision about you or your child’s orthodontic health. There’s no such thing as dumb or silly questions as far as we’re concerned, so feel free to ask us anything that will help you feel more in control of your orthodontics journey.

INSURANCE &
FINANCIAL OPTIONS

We participate with most major insurance plans that offer out-of-network benefits. Our team will work with your provider to make sure you understand your benefits, treatment costs, and responsibilities. Feel free to share your insurance details with us in advance so we can create a treatment journey and payment plans with your benefits in mind.

TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR
OF OUR OFFICE

We want you to feel safe, comfortable, and welcome at every visit, including the first one. To minimize surprises, we invite you to take a virtual tour of our office. Use the interactive arrows below to show yourself around our modern lobby and treatment areas, and every hallway and corner in between. We find this can be especially helpful to do with children who may be feeling a little nervous about their first visit.

If you’d rather preview our space in person, feel free to swing by for a complete tour of our practice. You’ll meet our team, walk through the office, and have a chance to ask any questions you might have.

  • “Dr. Royal is, hands-down, the best of the best. And her office is brand new with the newest equipment I’ve ever seen.”

I recently starting seeing her for Invisalign treatment and she was so kind, so thorough and paid incredible attention to detail. She took all the necessary time to walk me through the entire treatment, show me what my teeth will look like afterwards and help answer all my questions. It’s hard to find incredible folks in NYC. Dr. Royal is that needle in a haystack. Highest recommendation possible.

  • “I truly cannot even express my gratitude for this exceptional ortho practice."

Every single member of Dr. Royal’s team (including herself and Dr. Popper of course!) deliver the gold standard of care. They are competent, communicative, kind, and brilliantly intelligent with keen eyes for the best aesthetic outcome. From check-in to check-out, they truly do not miss a beat. The office is gorgeous and clean, and I look forward to my visits there! I am honored to be their patient, they are truly the best of the best. Thank you to the moon and back.

  • "We had such an amazing experience at Royal Orthodontics! From the consultation and through the whole process of braces."

The staff is friendly, helpful, and was always responsive to any question I had. My son(was age 13 when he got braces) went to every appointment alone! He was so comfortable and so well taken care of. Dr. Royal is above and beyond, and I highly recommend her!

  • “Couldn’t have asked for a better Invisilign experience working with Dr Royal and her team."

Every single staff member there treats you like royalty. I walk in and am always greeted with smiles and laughs — just great, genuine people who care for you and your goals with your smile. They were very attentive with what I wanted to accomplish with my smile.

  • "I can't say more positive things about Dr. Royal and her team at Royal Orthodontics."

Every person I interacted with over the course of my treatment has been professional, understanding and knowledgeable about the Invisalign process. Dr Royal in particular was extremely patient, answered each and every one of my questions, while giving me the best care. She spent time during each visit to address my concerns and keep me up to speed with my treatment. I would recommend Royal Orthodontics to anyone considering fixing their teeth alignment.

Having questions is normal.
Find answers to our most
common ones here.

  • At Royal Orthodontics we treat patients of all ages, from children, adolescents, to adults; however, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends an initial consultation at age 7 at which point we can determine if an early interceptive treatment might be indicated.  Schedule your or your child's consultation today and we will take a full set of orthodontic records so that we can advise you on the best course and timing of treatment for your smile.

  • It is totally normal to have some discomfort associated with tooth movement for the first 24-72 hours after an orthodontic adjustment.  Typically this discomfort can be managed easily with over the counter pain medication as needed, such as Tylenol, but distraction and keeping yourself busy is often the best medicine!

  • Hard/crunchy, and sticky/chewy foods should be avoided with braces and palate expanders as they can dislodge or break brackets and appliances.  While we understand that mistakes happen, breakage of your braces can slow down your overall treatment time so we want to avoid this as much as possible.  If your appliances do break, please give our office a text or call so that we can help set up a time for a repair in office.

  • Optimal oral hygiene is key to a smooth orthodontic treatment.  When your appliances are placed, we will review this in GREAT detail with you.  Thorough brushing (capturing all areas above, below and in between your braces) is key.  Tools such as proxy brushes, Platypus flossers, and a WaterPik are excellent supplemental tools to keep your braces or palate expander sparkling clean.

  • Poking wires can be a very normal part of orthodontic treatment, as wires can slide as a result of expected orthodontic tooth movement.  If you have a poking arch wire, you can use a cuticle cutter or nail clipper to smooth an irritating wire at home.  A pencil eraser can also be used to shift a wire that has slid off to one side back into place.  If you are unable to make your archwire comfortable at home, wax is also an excellent tool to hold you over until you are able to make it into our office for us to adjust the wire for you.

  • Your Invisalign aligners should be worn for 20-22 hours per day to achieve optimal tooth movement, and each aligner should be worn for 1 full week.  Aligners should be removed for eating and drinking (anything besides water), as well as during brushing.  If you miss more than 4-5 hours of aligner wear per day, 1 additional day should be added to that aligner's duration.

  • If you loose an Invisalign aligner during treatment, don't panic!  In this instance, you will move on to the next aligner in your sequence and add on as many days as you have missed from the previous aligner to the next aligner's course.

  • Retention is one of the most vital portions of your orthodontic treatment. Whether you are treated with braces or Invisalign, maintaining your final alignment is achieved by wearing retainers and this is a LIFETIME commitment.  Your teeth will be held in place for as long as you wear your retainers, but if retainer usage is discontinued it is very likely that your teeth will begin to relapse back. When your treatment is completed at Royal Orthodontics we will review your retention protocol with you and continue with scheduled follow up visits in office for approximately 1 year.
